If you are connecting any computer, printer, or other equipment to the network within the Chemistry or Geological Sciences Departments, you must register the equipment with Margaret Doll (margaret_doll@brown.edu). Send her

- the type of equipment, brand and model
-the serial number of the equipment if the equipment is owned by Brown,
-the ethernet id of your mac or the hardware address or the physical address of your Windows computer.
-the room in which the equipment will be located,
-the researcher's name if it is owned by Brown,
-and the operating system.

Network names for computers will start with two letters indicating the building in which the equipment is located, ie. "gc" for GeoChem, "lf" for Lincoln Field, "mm" for MacMillan or "met" for Metcalf Research. This is followed by three numbers indicating the room location.

Margaret will register your computer on the network. If you would like an account on our printserver to provide space for backups, send Margaret your Brown authid.

Before the computer is put on the network, it must have the approved anti-virus software installed on it. Symantec Anti-Virus is required. By the start of the fall semester, 2011, this software package may be changed; consult with one of your computer coordinators for verification. If it is a Windows computer it must also have Spybot if you are in the Chemistry Dept or Windows Defender from Microsoft if you are in Geological Sciences. Symantec and Spybot are available at http://software.brown.edu. Windows Defender is available from the Microsoft web pages.

Both programs must have up-to-date definitions installed. You must also scan your computer with the installed packages. All security updates must be made to the system. Regular updates to system patches and anti-virus definitions must be scheduled on the system.

You must be aware of your reponsibilities as a user on the network. Please read the policies listed on the top computing web page.

After your computer has been registered by Margaret Doll, make an appointment with Carol DeFeciani in Chemistry or Bill Collins in Geological Sciences or Margaret Doll. They will set your computer up for the network and for the departmental printers.

These procedures keep conflicts off the network and helps to prevent viruses and malware off our networks.
