Using Printers within
the Chemistry and Geological Sciences Departments

Our print servers are using omni drivers for the printers within the Departments where possible to print a wide variety of pdf, postscript, and plain text files. You must add PCL drivers on your Windows computers to work with the omni drivers on the print servers.

The use of PCL drivers exclusively on Window computers does not allow for the production of the specifically formatted pdf files for FastLane proposals. We have included instructions on the creation of these pdf files below.

We are advocating that the Windows computers, NT and above, add their printers as LPR printers. This eliminates the "Access Denied" message that you otherwise get on your print queues. Using LPR printers you may also delete your print jobs while they are still in your computer's print queue. The instructions for the creation of LPR printers on Windows NT, 2000, and XP follows.

Please note that the LPR writeup uses the print server for Geological Sciences. If you are adding a printer in the Chemistry department, substitute 128.148.68.50 for 128.148.124.140 in the examples.

If you do not want the LPR printing to your Windows XP or 2000, you may follow the basic directions for adding printers to Windows 98.
