Preregistration
Requirement
You must have already received
credit for Chemistry 0330 in order to register for this
course. If you did not pass Chem 0330, you may not take
Chem 0350. We will check this during week two.
Lecture Textbooks
"Organic Chemistry" (2nd Edition) Sorrell (University Science Books).
A "Solution to Exercises " book is also available.
Chemistry modeling sets are available in the bookstore, and are highly recommended.
Laboratory Textbook
Introduction to Organic Laboratory Techniques (Custom Edition for Brown University), Pavia, 1st edition, 2008 ISBN: 0495642037
Exams and Quizzes
All exams (except the final) will be two hour exams held from 7 - 9 PM.
Room assignments for the exams are based on your last name.
Last Name begins with A - M ---> Salomon 101
Last Name begins with N - Z ---> MacMillan 117
You may use hand-held models on the exams.
The final exam is scheduled for Monday, May 12th at 2 PM. Check the syllabus for the
specific dates of exams.
Grading
Final grades will be based on a total of 600 points,
which are broken down as follows: 3 two hour exams
(100 points each), final exam (200 points), and
laboratory (100 points). The laboratory must be
passed in order to receive credit for the course, and
you must do all of the labs to receive lab credit.
HISTORICAL GRADE BORDERS
Historically, the A/B border for the three exams and the final has fallen in the range of 75 - 79%. The B/C border on the exams and quizzes has fallen in the range near 57-60%. The C/NC border on the exams and quizzes has fallen in the range 45-48%. The average score for the laboratory (reports, quizzes and TA assessment) will be 87 (out of 100). The distribution of lab scores is usually fairly narrow (65% of students will be within 5 points of the average).
Using Historical Exam & Quiz Grade Borders with an average lab score, gives tentative grade borders
The A/B border (total points) may be somewhere between 462 - 482 out of 600
..............................................500*(0.75) + 100*(0.87) = 462
The B/C border (total points) may be somewhere between 372 - 387 out of 600
..............................................500*(0.57) + 100*(0.87) = 372
The C/NC border (total points) may be somewhere between 312 - 327 out of 600
..............................................500*(0.45) + 100*(0.87) = 312
Picking
Up Your Exams After They Have Been Graded
Once your professor indicates that exams have been
graded, they may be picked up from Amanda Figgins in Geochem 439. They will be available for pick-up during the hours of 10:30 AM – Noon and 1:30 – 3:00 PM for three days after they have been released. You must pick-up your exam in person, you cannot have a friend do it for you.
Regrade Procedure
Do not write on or erase anything on the original exam. Read over the answer
key FIRST. The point count is indicated in detail. If you feel a mistake was
made in grading your exam or in totaling your exam score, submit the exam to
Amanda Figgins in GeoChem 439 with a note that clearly explains how your answer is consistent with the answer key. This explanation should be no longer than
one page. WRITING THAT YOU DESERVE MORE POINTS IS NOT A USEFUL STRATEGY. Be sure to indicate which section you are in. Regrade requests will
be accepted up to one week after the date that the exams are available for pick-up. Regrades can be picked up in Geochem 439.
No
regrades will be granted for exams or quizzes that appear to have been altered. Altering an exam prior to regrade constitutes grounds for a forced NC in the class.
Office Hours
Both Professors will hold problem
sessions throughout the semester. Feel free to attend any problem session. Individual appointments may be scheduled by e-mail.
Missed Exams and Quizzes
•There
will be no make-up exams given.
•The
only valid excuses that will be accepted for missing an exam
are:
1) family related crisis;
2) serious health problems.
You must bring your professor a note from an appropriate Dean or University Health Services
official which verifies your excuse. In these cases, the exam will be averaged
out of your course grade.
•If
you cannot take an exam during the regularly scheduled
time because of a class conflict or travel associated with a Brown athletic team,
you must contact your professor at least two weeks prior to the
exam. We will make accommodations for these circumstances
on an individual basis. We will also require that you bring a
note from your coach or have them send your professor an email that verifies your travel plans.
•If
you miss more than one exam, you will receive an NC for the course.
If you miss an exam due to an unexcused absence, you
will receive 0 points for that exam. If other emergency
situations arise, contact your professor as soon as possible
and we will work things out on an individual basis.
Prevention
of Cheating
The Universitys policy on cheating is outlined at the following web site:
http://www.brown.edu/Administration/Dean_of_the_College/academic_code/code.html.
All exams will be proctored by both the professors and teaching
assistants as a deterrent to cheating. We will select a random sampling of
exams to photocopy before they are handed back to students. If
you request a regrade, all of your subsequent exams will be photocopied before
they are returned to you, as a precautionary measure. |
